FondThought After-Death Checklist Kit

The practical next steps, one calm step at a time.

A step-by-step checklist for what to do when someone dies: the paperwork, calls, accounts, and decisions that follow, so you do not have to become a legal expert while you grieve.

Two pages from the kit: how to use it, and what to do now and what not to rush. See how it works before you buy.

DO NOW
•Confirm the death has been properly pronounced and the right people are handling next steps.
•Cover immediate care for dependent children, adults, or pets.
•Secure the home, vehicles, keys, medications, and obvious valuables.
•Start one "Action Required" folder for papers and mail.
•Choose one person to keep the master notes.
DO NOT RUSH
•Do not personally pay unsecured debts just because a collector calls.
•Do not hand out valuable property because family members ask for it.
•Do not close the main email or mobile phone before checking recovery and two-factor needs.
•Do not cancel property insurance before confirming what coverage is still needed.
•Do not assume a power of attorney continues after death.
The timeline

What needs attention, and when.

DO NOWCAN WAITASK A PROFESSIONALThe workbook uses these three labels throughout.
Why a plan helps

Settling an estate takes more time than most families expect.

Families often pay an advisor by the hour just to collect basic facts and account numbers. Walk in organized and spend that time on real decisions.

Start meetings prepared

Fill out a meeting-prep sheet once, then hand it to your attorney or CPA so the first meeting goes to decisions, not data collection.

Avoid costly slips

Closing a phone line too soon can lock you out of two-factor logins. Paying a debt from your own money before you know whether you are responsible can cost you.

Know what to ask about

Flags the one-time Social Security death payment and VA burial benefits for eligible veterans, with links to the official pages.

21 mistakes to avoid

Know the traps before you step in them.

Numbered the same way as in the workbook.

What's inside

Everything in one steady kit.

The Complete Kit adds
Texas Edition pages

State-specific starting points for Texas estates: death certificates, vehicle transfers, small-estate affidavits, and community property.

Part Three: complex estates

Extra pages for trusts, business interests, out-of-state property, valuables, blended families, and executor compensation.

Companion Tracker

A 21-tab Google Sheet with a dashboard, task list, and logs for contacts, accounts, assets, debts, calls, and documents.

Family Orientation Deck

A 15-slide deck for the family or executor meeting: what to do now, who does what, and how to give every task one owner.

Why this isn't just a checklist

A free checklist tells you to call the bank. This kit tells you what to say.

You get the words to use, what to ask for, and sheets that save paid time with your attorney or CPA. For example, at $300 an hour, 20 minutes spent gathering basic information costs $100, and the meeting-prep sheets are designed to remove that step.

Complete Kit

Free checklists vary. This is a general comparison, not a review of any one resource.

Texas Edition

Built for Texas families, useful everywhere.

Much of the kit works in any state. The Complete Kit adds Texas pages for estates with Texas property. They are a navigation aid, not a substitute for a Texas probate attorney.

Small-estate affidavit (Estates Code Chapter 205): what it is, and why to confirm the current rules before relying on it
Community property and shared debts: why Texas questions deserve Texas-specific legal analysis
DSHS death certificates: $20 for the first certified copy and $3 for each additional copy ordered at the same time, as of September 2026
TxDMV vehicle transfers: Form 130-U, probate versus non-probate paperwork, and the beneficiary title window, generally day 5 to day 180 after the owner's death
Why I made this

I wish I had had this when my father died.

My father was living with his father and taking care of him when he had a stroke and died suddenly. I lived out of state. I flew home to a funeral I had never planned, my father’s estate, and my grandfather, who had dementia and now needed a nursing home, and whose belongings and estate needed sorting too.

I had a team helping me, and I was still in a whirlwind of grief and overwhelm. I did not know what to do first, what could wait, or who things should go to.

I made this kit because I wish I had had it. It is the list I needed: what to do now, what to leave alone, who to call, and what to hand to a professional. I hope it gives you one less thing to figure out.
